Curls and Company is a creative collective of stylists specifically chosen because of their talent, training, personality and devotion to the craft of hair styling. Our goal is that you have a rewarding experience and feel good about yourself and our salon after your visit!

​We may specialize in the Dry Curly Cutting and DevaCurl method but all of our staff is trained in cut and color for all hair types.

4worldlovers: Spruce is a collaboration of two experienced stylists who have mastered various specialties. Krista specializes in curly hair and Dee specializes in curls and thin, fine hair and is also a mens grooming expert. Spruce was born by the desire of two best friends to create a space where they can express themselves artistically while meeting the wellness needs of the client. It is our priority to be able to spend time with our clients to be able to provide the very best service and chairside manner. We are by appointment only and we do our absolute best to accommodate new clients and sincerely appreciate personal referrals! Spruce Salon is also home to independent stylists, Marissa Bielak, color genius, of C.R.E.A.M and the incomparable Kate Barnes of Kate Barnes Hair!

Resolute and Tenacious, Krista is always determined to achieve what she desires in life, and that is how this Indiana native built her career in Chicago.

With nearly 15 years in the salon industry, her diverse education allows her to create effortless lively hairstyles, dimensional colors, and beautiful blondes. A Jill of all trades! When Krista was not satisfied with the little education and techniques offered for curly hair, she took it in her hands and created her own curly cutting method that has given her the spotlight as the master of curly hair. Her eye for curly hair cutting is unparalleled in the industry.

When Krista is not behind the chair you can find her hanging out with her handsome husband Addison and chasing their fiercely independent 2 year old Petal. Backpacking the world is her other passion, she has many stories to share!

Dee has accomplished so much doing what she loves in her over 30 years behind the chair and in the industry. From starting her first shop in Florida to running a studio in the basement of her home in Indiana to now co-owning Spruce Salon in Chicago.

Building connections with her clients is key. Not only does she prioritize their appearance, she encourages them to internalize self confidence through a positive self image. She works with her clients to create looks that work for them and their lifestyle so they feel comfortable styling at home. Dee cuts both men’s and women’s hair and her specialties lie in fine, thin hair, with curls or without. Her talent for mens grooming is attributed to working in a high end male hair salon for over 10 years. Though she is Pivot Point trained, Dee has created a way of cutting hair using the various techniques, education and experience she has gained in her 30 plus years. Her work has been featured in various media and platforms.

Mom to two incredible young women, Dee is passionate about spending time with her family, her friends and her pup Odie. She enjoys travel, hiking in the mountains, being in nature and photographing everything. She practices and teaches yoga and meditation. You can often find her on the lakefront at sunrise or stargazing at night.

What’s the Difference Between a DevaCurl Cut and a Traditional Cut?

The DevaCurl cut is for people looking to wear their hair curly the majority of the time. It is cut in a “waterfall brick lay” pattern, so when the curls are dry there’s no chunky, awkward layers. The cut removes weight from the inside so you don’t end up with super short pieces.

If you cut at a peculiar spot, one’s curls may appear to change but it is a temporary issue that will return to normal once the hair has grown back. Whether it’s the weight of one’s hair or the reduction in volume from the shears, cutting your hair changes the shape, size, and bulk but it does not change the texture.

Got curly hair? We ask that you please come to your appointment with clean naturally styled curls. Please wear your hair down and with minimum product. We need to be able to get our fingers through your hair. All of our stylists have undergone training in dry curly-cutting methods.

All custom color services, color transformation, and perms (with Jordan) start at $75 per hour $12 color cost per bowl. You will receive a quote during the consultation.

Barbara’s Junior Stylist program helps newer stylists work on their skills, confidence, and knowledge while building their clientele. All of our Junior Stylists have gone through extensive training and are continuing their education with head stylists Sergio and Larn.

While working through this program, they offer certain services at discounted price points. Our Junior Stylists are all at different points in their careers, so may not all offer the same services at the same price points.
